Month of the Military Child: Honoring our Military Families

In April, we celebrate the strength and resilience of military children.

During the Month of the Military Child, we honor and recognize the sacrifices made by military children and families as they serve our country.

When is Month of the Military Child?

Month of the Military Child is celebrated in April each year. It was designed to highlight the challenges military children face.

The average military child changes schools six to eight times - far more often than their counterparts. They also are often separated from their parents by deployments, and are expected to handle the stress and anxiety that comes from parents being placed in danger based on their military locations and assignments.

Those changes, along with the many other stressors military children face, are among the reasons we hold their strength and fortitude in awe.

Why Does the Month of the Military Child Matter to Us?

At Andrews Federal Credit Union, our mission is to support and serve our members.

We have been supporting military families since our inception in 1948. That means we have supported generations of military families and military children as they’ve grown up in the credit union. Some of our members even grew up as military children and are continuing to pass the legacy of membership on to their own young families.

Because of our commitment to our members, it is important to us to ensure military children and families have the resources they need for ongoing support. That includes:

  • Providing college scholarships that can help military families with the costs of higher education
  • Supporting morale and welfare programs on our military bases
  • Providing funds to support programs like Scouting and Girl Scouts that military children participate in at our overseas military bases
  • Sponsoring classrooms at schools on military installations
  • Encouraging a love of literacy through creating a sidewalk library for a military installation school at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling
  • Participating in programs like Military Saves, designed to help military families build emergency savings funds
  • Hiring military veterans and dependents and empowering their careers
  • Wearing purple in honor of Month of the Military Child

We are proud to serve and support military families, whether they are serving at home or abroad, and we honor our military children for their adaptability, resilience, and independence.

We encourage everyone to take a moment this month to recognize and appreciate the military children in your life. Whether it’s through a simple thank you, a small gift, or supporting programs that benefit military families, every gesture counts.
